We originally posted this blog post last year, but it still rings true to the fun of shopping small!
Historic Park City boasts more than 250 shops, restaurants, resort and cultural activities, art galleries and signature events; the core of our business district is made of small businesses. Naturally, we love Small Business Saturday. We’ve all heard the statistics about small businesses and their contribution to the community. It’s staggering, and it is true. While it is important to consider the financial impacts of your choices, my decision to shop small businesses also stems from the experience.
As a child, the Friday after Thanksgiving my grandmother and I would trek to Downtown Athens, Georgia and visit all of our favorite shops. I would select a few items that I loved, and she would choose a few to surprise me with as Christmas gifts. We would finish the outing with lunch at one of the local restaurants. This time with my grandmother was more about being together than just shopping, and the gifts she selected were more than gifts; they were expressions of her love and memories of our day together.
These memories have a lot to do with my joy of gift giving as an adult. I love gift giving. To me, it is not about the amount of money spent, but the enjoyment of purchasing something for a loved one that they wouldn’t buy for themselves; something they will love. I love the shop owners and employees you engage with when you shop local. The stories behind their shops and wares provide an entirely different shopping experience. Shopping small takes shopping and turns it into an experience. This holiday season, I urge you to find joy in your shopping experience. Choose items that make your heart smile. Learn the story behind the item and the shop owner. Choose something one of a kind knowing that you had just as much fun purchasing it as giving it.
Historic Park City is making an event out of Small Business Saturday. Once darkness falls, join us as we light up the sky in holiday cheer with the Electric Parade and Festivities. Santa and a juggling elf will be strolling the street throughout the afternoon and Christmas Carolers will join the festivities from 5 – 7 p.m.
Have a wonderful holiday season!
