The Trial and Tragedy of Patrick Coughlin Lecture

In 1895, he and two friends stole a box of strawberries from a merchant’s wagon parked on Main Street. When local sheriff John Harrington went looking for them, they left town on ‘borrowed’ horses. The lecturers will share their extensive research on the events in 1895 and 1896, which led to one of Utah’s most intensive manhunts in history and the first execution after Utah statehood. The lecture will be held at the Park City Museum Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive.

Given by Brian Buck, this lecture discusses the horrific mine accidents around Park City. These were always newsworthy and the Park Record published descriptions of at least 48 shaft accidents between 1880 and 1980. Buck has uncovered these news articles and will describe a number of these accidents, the causal factors involved, traumas to the victims, and measures employed over the years to reduce the occurrence of the accidents. The lecture will be held at the Park City Museum Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive.
